At Ro•Sham•Bo Creative, we're passionate about helping businesses grow. We love building brands, creating campaigns, designing websites, developing marketing strategies, and helping organizations connect with the people they serve. It's what we do every day as a marketing agency in Rapid City.

But if you've spent any amount of time in the Black Hills, you know that this community is built on something bigger than business. It's built on neighbors helping neighbors. It's built on organizations stepping up to fill important needs. It's built on volunteers giving their evenings, weekends, and talents to causes they care about. And it's built on local businesses that understand success means more than simply turning a profit.

Over the years, we've been fortunate to work with incredible clients and organizations throughout western South Dakota. What we've learned is that some of the strongest communities aren't created by a handful of people doing everything. They're created when lots of people contribute what they can, whether that's time, talent, financial support, expertise, or simply a willingness to show up.

That's why community involvement has always been an important part of who we are as a company. Not because it's good marketing. Not because it wins awards. And certainly not because we think we're special for doing it.

We do it because we care deeply about the place we call home.

Good Communities Don’t Build Themselves

Recently, our team had the opportunity to once again support one of our favorite local events, the 13th Annual Kieffer Sanitation Trash Can Open benefiting Children's Home Society of South Dakota. The event supports the organization's Rapid City Campus and this year's tournament generated an incredible $50,000 in net proceeds to further its mission.

For us, the Trash Can Open is a perfect example of how businesses can contribute in different ways. Throughout the planning process, we're proud to provide graphic design and event support at nonprofit rates, helping bring everything from registration materials and raffle tickets to Scan-to-Pay signage and tournament graphics to life. But our favorite part comes when the event finally arrives. That's when our team steps away from the computer screens, volunteers at holes, jumps into the tournament, and spends the day supporting an organization that's making a real difference for children and families in our region.

One of our favorite parts of the event isn't necessarily the golf itself. It's seeing local businesses come together around a shared purpose. Competitors become collaborators. Companies that might normally only interact in a business setting spend the day raising money for children and families who need support. The event serves as a reminder that when local organizations, businesses, and individuals work together, real impact can happen.

“Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!”

That same belief in community extends beyond charitable fundraising and into the arts as well.

The Black Hills are home to an incredible creative community, and organizations like the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra play an important role in enriching life throughout our region. That's why we're proud to support events that help keep local arts thriving.

Our own Kandi Cornford has been heavily involved with Black Hills Symphony Orchestra events, including the delightfully themed "Dearest Gentle Reader" Bridgerton Brunch and the annual Bilbo Baggins Birthday Bash. Both events bring together community members around shared interests while helping support local arts programming. Whether attendees arrive dressed for Regency-era society or ready to celebrate a certain hobbit's birthday, the common thread is community connection.

As a creative agency, we understand firsthand how important arts organizations are to a healthy, vibrant community. They inspire creativity, foster connection, create opportunities for learning, and provide experiences that bring people together. Those things matter. In many ways, they're just as essential to a thriving region as economic development and business growth.

Sometimes Helping Looks a Lot Like Packing Boxes

Of course, not all volunteer opportunities come with themed costumes or golf clubs. Sometimes community service looks much simpler. Sometimes it's just a group of people standing around a table packing food for families they've never met.

Our team has spent time volunteering with Feeding South Dakota, helping package food and resources for individuals and families facing food insecurity. Feeding South Dakota serves communities across all 66 counties and provides millions of meals annually through its hunger-relief efforts.

There is something incredibly humbling about those volunteer days. Nobody is there for recognition. Nobody is there to promote themselves. Everyone is there because they want to help make life a little easier for someone else.

When you're packing boxes alongside friends, coworkers, and other volunteers from the community, you're reminded how much good can happen when people dedicate just a small amount of their time to a worthwhile cause. The impact of those few hours extends far beyond the walls of the facility and reaches families throughout our state.

Learning from Others

Community involvement also takes another form that's equally important: learning.

One thing we love about the Black Hills business community is that there is no shortage of people who are eager to share knowledge, help others succeed, and continue developing professionally. That spirit of collaboration is something we actively encourage within our team.

Every week, Alli participates in BNI Rapid Referrals, connecting with local professionals and building relationships that strengthen the business community throughout the region. These connections aren't just valuable for our agency. They're valuable because they create opportunities for local businesses to support one another and grow together.

Our team is also excited to have Sam involved with AAF Black Hills, an organization dedicated to providing education, resources, networking opportunities, and professional development for advertising professionals throughout the area. Staying connected to industry trends and evolving best practices ultimately helps all of us become better marketers, communicators, and business partners.

Lauren has also had opportunities to share her expertise with organizations such as the SD CEO West Women's Business Center, speaking on topics including SEO, paid advertising, social media strategy, programmatic advertising, and web development. Experiences like these create valuable conversations among local business owners and entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their organizations and better serve their customers.

The Best Communities Are Built by People Who Show Up

To us, community involvement isn't just about giving back. It's also about investing in the future. Every relationship built, every lesson learned, every volunteer hour contributed, and every event supported helps strengthen the broader community we're all a part of.

That's why you'll continue to see the Ro•Sham•Bo team showing up.

You'll find us on a golf course helping raise money for Children's Home Society. You'll spot us supporting local arts organizations. You'll see us volunteering at Feeding South Dakota. You'll find our team members attending networking meetings, serving organizations, sharing knowledge, learning new skills, and looking for opportunities to contribute wherever we can.

Not because we think a marketing agency should do these things. Because we think people should do these things.

Why We Keep Saying Yes

As marketers, we know every organization has a story. But behind every successful nonprofit, fundraiser, community event, food drive, arts program, or educational initiative are people putting in the work long before anyone sees the final result. Those are the people and organizations that deserve the spotlight. We're simply grateful for the opportunity to play a small role alongside them.

Whether it's helping raise funds for Children's Home Society, volunteering at Feeding South Dakota, cheering on local arts through Black Hills Symphony Orchestra events, building relationships through organizations like BNI Rapid Referrals and AAF Black Hills, or sharing marketing knowledge with local professionals, every experience reinforces the same belief:

A stronger community benefits everyone. Stronger opportunities for future generations. And that's something worth investing in.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

RoShamBo Creative team

If you're a business owner, consider sponsoring a local event. If you're looking for a way to give back, spend a few hours volunteering with an organization that matters to you. If you're part of a nonprofit, keep telling your story and inviting people into your mission.

And if you've been waiting for the "right time" to get involved in your community, this is your sign.

Start small. Show up. Ask how you can help.

You might be surprised by the impact a few hours, a few dollars, or a few conversations can make.

At Ro•Sham•Bo Creative, we'll continue doing our best to support the people, organizations, and causes that make Rapid City and the Black Hills such an incredible place to live, work, and play.

Because at the end of the day, we're more than a marketing agency in Rapid City. We're community members first. And that's a brand we're proud to represent.
